Great for when you use regular AA batteries, not rechargeables. However, renowned for its CMOS sensor is less sharp than the CCD. But why is it called a back-illuminated? Well, traditionally, the sensor array of photosites (pixels) that is responsive to light. Each photosite is surrounded by circuitry necessary to take information to the processor but because of this, they tend to block some of the light. A back-illuminated sensor has a circuit placed in the rear, so to see it, it looks like it's in the back. Therefore, if the light is hitting the sensor backwards, it will light up in the back.
